What is a VIN?
A Vehicle Identification Number is a unique 17-character code assigned to every road vehicle. It encodes the manufacturer, key specifications, model year, assembly plant and a production serial number.
Where do I find my VIN?
Look at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, on the driver's door pillar, or in your vehicle registration document (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I in Germany).
Which vehicles can I decode?
Cars, vans, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles from German, European and most international manufacturers built to the 17-character ISO 3779 standard.
Is the decode free?
Yes. Basic VIN decoding is free with no account required. History reports and API access are separate paid services.
Why can't a character be I, O or Q?
Those letters are excluded from the VIN standard because they're easily confused with the digits 1 and 0, which would cause transcription errors.
